Man fights to keep veggie garden in front yard

http://www.clickorlando.com

An Orlando man is fighting city officials to keep his vegetable garden in his front yard. You have to step over radishes, wax beans and kale to get to Jason Helvingston's front door in College Park. However, his 25 x 25 foot micro-irrigated vegetable garden is against city code, and the city of Orlando has asked Helvingston to dig it up by Wednesday.

Federal and State Police Conduct Marijuana Terrorism Drill

http://stopthedrugwar.org

Northern California pot growers bomb a car and a bus, then take over Shasta Dam in a bid to free an imprisoned comrade. It sounds like the plot to a very cheesy Grade-B thriller, but it was actually the premise for a day-long terrorist attack drill conducted by 20 state, local, and federal law enforcement agencies Wednesday.

http://thenewamerican.com

Two leaders in the European home education movement, a father from Sweden and a German mother, drew tears from the audience as they told a packed conference room about life in exile and the heart-rending decision to flee abroad. While each of their stories was unique, both parents were forced to escape from their homelands due to relentless government persecution when they refused to stop homeschooling.

DOT inspection watch dog for truckers.

https://www.thedotwatchdog.com

thedotwatchdog.com looks like a very handy web site for truckers who want to know were D.O.T. is. DOT (Department of Transportation) a.k.a. truck police, are the armed tax collectors who specifically harass tuckers, landscapers and basically any one who may drive in a "commercial looking truck". I avoid DOT when ever I can, because even if everything goes well it is going to be an hour or 2 with the truck inspection.

Why not legalize pot?

http://www.cnn.com

In 1970, the federal government listed pot to be more harmful than cocaine and meth. We now know that isn't true. That's not to say legalizing pot is without risks; it has been shown to impair concentration. But one study found alcohol was by far the most dangerous drug, followed by heroin and crack. Weed rated far down the list. So why do we continue to allow the Nixon administration's hatred of hippies to influence what we think about drug usage today? Nixon budgeted $100 million to fight what he called public enemy No. 1 -- illegal drugs. In 2010, it was $15 billion.

Chattanooga police give citations to men for attending job training

http://www.timesfreepress.com

About 15 men attended Jobs for Life on the first day. After they started getting citations, the number dwindled, Rooks said. The class has several gang members and others who have criminal records. They want to change their lives so much that they gathered birth certificates, school transcripts and other documents needed to enroll in the class, she said.

Curfew Imposed on American Troops in Japan After Suspected Rape

http://www.nytimes.com

The United States military imposed a curfew on Friday on all of its nearly 50,000 uniformed personnel stationed in Japan, as it tried to respond to public outrage over the suspected rape of a woman in Okinawa by two American sailors. The case struck a nerve in Okinawa, with its uncomfortable echoes of the 1995 gang rape of a schoolgirl by three American servicemen. That crime prompted huge demonstrations that for a time seemed to threaten the entire American military presence on the island.

The Silent Marijuana Majority

http://www.mediaite.com

f you were to put televangelist Pat Robertson, progressive media mogul Arianna Huffington, libertarian billionaire David Koch, and rap/reggae artist Snoop Dogg in a room together, do you think you could get them all to unanimously agree on anything?

Sounds like an impossible task. But actually there is common ground: they all believe our war on marijuana has failed. All of the above public figures believe in either the decriminalization or legalization of marijuana.

Honorable mentions go to New York City’s Taxi and Limousine Commission for driving out Uber’s online taxi-hailing service and to automobile dealers’ groups in four states for trying to have Tesla dealerships declared illegal. But the grand prize in this week’s unexpectedly heated competition for most creative use of government to stifle innovation has to go to Minnesota.

John Gurdon, Nobel Prize Winner, Wasn't The Best Science Student

http://www.huffingtonpost.com

Teacher knows best? That doesn't appear to be the case for one teacher who called a future Nobel Prize winner's dreams of becoming a scientist "quite ridiculous" in a scathing report card. John Gurdon's future success was almost nipped in the bud in 1949 when a schoolmaster at elite Eton College wrote on his report card that pursuing science would be a waste of time.
