VCU violence

http://wtvr.com

Last night Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) had a town hall meeting to talk about the rash of violent crime that has been happening there recently. VCDL and the press were there. Things started off on a sour note as a VCU police officer tried to tell VCDL member Don Litton that he could not video tape on campus because it was "private property."

Coverage from Richmond Channel 6 (CBS):

Secret suspensions: Public in dark; this needs to stop

http://www.unionleader.com

The lack of information provided the public regarding the suspensions of Manchester High School West’s principal and her secretary, and Raymond’s school superintendent, and the dismissal of Fremont’s police chief, is appalling. It also ought to be, as the education community likes to say, a “teachable moment.”

We Fund Dependency

http://www.realclearpolitics.com

"There are no jobs!" That is what people told me outside a government "jobs center" in New York City. But, 4 researchers quickly found 40 job openings. So what goes on at these government "job centers?" I asked a college intern, to find out. Her conclusions:
--It's easier to get welfare than to work.
--The government would rather sign me up for welfare than help me find work.
--America has taxpayer-funded bureaucracies that encourage people to be dependent. They incentivize people to take "free stuff," not to take initiative.

Your right to resell your own stuff is in peril

http://www.marketwatch.com

At issue in Kirtsaeng v. John Wiley & Sons is the first-sale doctrine in copyright law, which allows you to buy and then sell things like electronics, books, artwork and furniture, as well as CDs and DVDs, without getting permission from the copyright holder of those products. Under the doctrine, which the Supreme Court has recognized since 1908, you can resell your stuff without worry because the copyright holder only had control over the first sale.

Drone Strikes in Pakistan Miss Militants and "Terrorize" Civilians

http://www.democracynow.org

A new report on the secret U.S. drone war in Pakistan says the attacks have killed far more civilians than acknowledged, traumatized a nation and undermined international law. In "Living Under Drones," researchers conclude the drone strikes "terrorize men, women, and children, giving rise to anxiety and psychological trauma among civilian communities." The study concludes that most of the militants killed in the strikes have been low-level targets whose deaths have failed to make the United States any safer.
