ALEC: Corporations Funding Legislation and Intellectual Property

I have been reading up on the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), a legislation powerhouse responsible for laws such as the Voter ID legislation that we are dealing with here in PA. They claim to be proponents of the free market, federalism, and limited government, but this whole group is just really creeping me out. Seems to support of transition of power, rather than a lessening of regulation. And then I saw this article supporting intellectual property rights.

Apple rejects app that reports US drone strikes.

"It’s the third time in a month that Apple has turned Drones+ away, says Josh Begley, the program’s New York-based developer. The company’s reasons for keeping the program out of the App Store keep shifting. First, Apple called the bare-bones application that aggregates news of U.S. drone strikes in Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia “not useful.” Then there was an issue with hiding a corporate logo. And now, there’s this crude content problem."

US Copyright Group Sues Lawyer for Aiding BitTorrent Defendants

This particular story hosted on OSNews, a popular site for emerging OS information troubled me so much, I had to create an account here to share this. Evidently, The US Copyright groups suing torrent users for allegedly downloading movies from bit-torrent sites, is now suing a lawyer for providing effective legal defense for Innocent victims of US Corporate hit squads. Evidently, the Legal firm representing Big Media threatened to double the fine of anyone who tries to defend themselves. Is this not the definition of Extortion?

NAB, RIAA May Seek Mandate For FM Radios In Mobile Devices

"Music labels and radio broadcasters can't agree on much, including whether radio should be forced to turn over hundreds of millions of dollars a year to pay for the music it plays. But the two sides can agree on this: Congress should mandate that FM radio receivers be built into cell phones, PDAs, and other portable electronics.
