Read more »It was one of the hottest days of spring on New York's Long Island, and Marcus Starkman was among those who went to the beach for some sun and sand.
Starkman was lying in a chaise longue on Long Beach. Suddenly, police got a call about a swimmer in distress and rushed to the rescue.
In the confusion Wednesday, a police SUV ran over Starkman as he was talking on a phone and listening to the radio, according to Newsday.

CHICKASHA— Grady County commissioners will pay $15,000 to a woman whose dog was fatally shot by a sheriff's deputy who had stopped to ask for directions.
Tammy Christopher initially asked for $25,000, alleging deputy Sean Knight "grossly overreacted" when he killed the dog on Aug. 25.
