Bill would nuke Visa cards, Adwords, DNS records for pirates

http://arstechnica.com

"If rightsholders get their way, overseas pirate websites could soon be inaccessible to US users, lose their ability to process US credit cards, and be banned from Google Adwords. The Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act is back this week in the US Senate."

This part is particularly ominous:

"A service provider, as that term is defined in section 512(k)(1) of title 17, United States Code, or other operator of a domain name system server shall take reasonable steps that will prevent a domain name from resolving to that domain name's Internet protocol address."

Internet censorship bill being pushed through lame-duck Congress

http://www.rawstory.com

A bill giving the government the power to shut down Web sites that host materials that infringe copyright is making its way quietly through the lame-duck session of Congress, raising the ire of free-speech groups and prompting a group of academics to lobby against the effort.

Stop the Internet Blacklist

http://www.huffingtonpost.com

When it really matters to them, Congressmembers can come together -- with a panache and wry wit you didn't know they had. As banned books week gets underway, and President Obama admonishes oppressive regimes for their censorship of the Internet, a group of powerful Senators -- Republicans and Democrats alike -- have signed onto a bill that would vastly expand the government's power to censor the Internet.

ACTA Text Leaks: U.S. Concedes on Secondary Liability [...]

http://www.michaelgeist.ca

Given the history of ACTA leaks, to no one's surprise, the latest version of the draft agreement was leaked last night on KEI's website. The new version - which reflects changes made during an intense week of negotiations last month in Washington - shows a draft agreement that is much closer to becoming reality. Square brackets have been removed from many sections, leaving the core issue of scope of the agreement as the biggest issue to be resolved when the next round of negotiations begins in a few weeks in Japan. [...]

Should Videotaping the Police Really Be a Crime?

http://www.time.com

Anthony Graber, a Maryland Air National Guard staff sergeant, faces up to 16 years in prison. His crime? He videotaped his March encounter with a state trooper who pulled him over for speeding on a motorcycle. Then Graber put the video — which could put the officer in a bad light — up on YouTube. It doesn't sound like much. But Graber is not the only person being slapped down by the long arm of the law for the simple act of videotaping the police in a public place. Prosecutors across the U.S. claim the videotaping violates wiretap laws — a stretch, to put it mildly.

Goverment I.C.E.'ing movie sharing online.

http://www.variety.com

Apparently, it is now the job of "I.C.E" (as if they didn't choose that just to try to be scary), to shut down not only illegal immigrants, but also...illegal movie watching on the internet.

A popular site, linked here: http://www.movies-links.tv/index.html now redirects you to a super-creepy "we will hurt you" style message from your happy servants in the federal government.

Say what you will about internet piracy, but what does I.C.E. have to do with this?

Should Obama Control the Internet? from Mother Jones magazine

http://motherjones.com

That this is even being debated rather than outright rejected shows how far we're devolving into tyranny. But their use of fear and promise of "security" will fool many.
