CA Bill to Legalize Pot Advances, Law Enforcement Complains

A bill to legalize marijuana in California was approved by a key committee of the Assembly, in spite of opposition from law enforcement.

Assemblyman Danny Gilmore, a former CHP commander, said the estimated $1.3 billion in tax revenue is not worth the grief that will be caused by legalization. Gilmore uses the logical fallacy of the slippery slope arguement: "What's next? Are we going to legalize methamphetamines, cocaine?"

Bob Cooke, former president of the CA Narcotics Officers Assn told the committee: "The mere consideration of an attempt to trade human misery for tax dollars smacks of the cynical throwing away of countless human beings." I wonder how many people Cooke has made miserable and "thrown away" into jail over a plant?

Despite the difficulties that present with taxing something easily grown, any opposition is completely and utterly hypocritical unless you intend to also ban alcohol and tobacco. A bill seeking to legalize marijuana in California won initial approval from a legislative committee Tuesday in what may be a purely symbolic vote because a second committee likely won't take it up in time. If California not only gets AB 390 out of committee – which it has by now – but into general session and passes it, that would be a great stride in ending the dumbest prohibition in the history of the western world.
