Cops use chopper to buy doughnuts.

http://www.metro.co.uk

Most sugar-loving cops get their doughnuts by strolling into a shop or by taking the squad car. But when you really need to munch on some sprinkles, there is a time when only a helicopter will meet your transportation needs.
Witnesses say two cops used a police chopper to buy a box of doughnuts from Krispy Kremes. The helicopter costs taxpayers about £40 an hour, but that didn't stop the pair swooping in for a snack.

And I remember when this happened. What makes this even more of a debacle is that they traveled roughly 12 miles...for doughnuts. If I remember correctly, the cost for the flight was about $1800. But this kind of wasteful idiocy is nothing new here. A friend of mine works for the state of New Mexico. His department had 35 grand in budget surplus, so the heads told them to spend it. They looked around and said there's nothing we need, we don't need it. Spend it, was the reply. So they bought about 3 grand in totally unnecessary stuff and then someone else in the department decided to order calendars - 10 grand worth. When they arrived, they were passed out and made available, but they were quickly exposed as useless. She had ordered the prior year's calendars, the kind that have 18 months or whatever. A business would have returned them, but lacking incentives and saddled with only the goal of spending money, the calendars went into some storage area. Ten thousand dollars.

operation costs

Working with helicopters for the offshore industry, I can say without a doubt, the operational costs of a helicopter are FAR more than 40pound per hour. They tend to be starting at 800 US and higher depending on model and size. maint, pilot, fuel, licensing... many here in Japan are at 1250 per hour to operate.
