I'd offer up the suggestion that the author doesn't have to tell her about any gods at all. Just tell her when she's old enough that there are certain people in society that believe in certain things which are outside of the realm of reason and science. Then when one of her friends offers to take her to their church one Sunday, he can let her go, and then discuss it with her at length when she gets back. I think he'll find that she will figure things out on her own.
