Successful Central Florida Liberty Activist Event
TJLawJX 2 years 38 weeks 6 days 50 min ago
After having spent several hours the night before handing out fliers to Orlando's homeless community, Central Florida Liberty Activists came together on the evening of Monday, August 23, 2010 to form the "City Hall Sandwich Club" on the greens of the Orlando City Hall. A small portion of the group arrived early to pass out T-Shirts with the City Hall Sandwich Club Logo printed bright red on the front, vowing to return shortly with the food. A few minutes after the clothing handout the group returned to City Hall holding signs reading "Disobey Tyranny", "Free Food", "Is This Illegal", "Good People Break Bad Laws", "Vets Help Vets" and "City Hall Sandwich Club". While listening to a local Activist Ukulele player, John Kurtz, the organizer of this particular event and the rest of the group calmly proceeded to pass out about 150 sandwiches, fruit, cookies and drinks to the large group of homeless whom had already formed lines.
The police were present during both the clothing and food handouts with one patrol car and several bicycle officers all grouped together watching the group from a pleasant distance and remaining peaceful. Two local news channels; WESH 2 and WKMG Local 6 arrived to film the event and conduct some interviews, neither of these channels carried this news on their 11:00 evening news broadcast. The City Council members, whom were publicly invited by John Kurtz earlier in the week, did not show up to join the group in peacefully helping their community.
After the handouts had finished, the Liberty Activists made rounds on the City Hall greens picking up any leftover trash, and then politely thanked the officers for using their discretion. The City Hall Sandwich Club passed out all of their food and vowed to return as soon as they could. It was heard amongst the group as they were leaving the City Hall vicinity that there may be a much larger clothing giveaway at the next event as they plan to increase their numbers and visibility in the Orlando downtown community.
The City Hall Sandwich Club group has begun working on their website www.CityHallSandwichClub.com and will have the site available to the public in the next couple days. Please keep an eye on this website as future community events will be chronicled as they occur. Raw Qik video of the event can be viewed at www.qik.com/tjlawjx
