Cops and their worshippers never tire of using the danger of police work as a justification for special privileges. But how dangerous is the job anyway? This piece in The Agitator points out that according to CNN/Money, police officer doesn't even make the top-ten list of most dangerous jobs in America, and is safer than being a fishermen, a garbage collector, farmer, or truck driver. And according to the NY Times, most on-duty police deaths are caused by traffic accidents not while speeding to an emergency. I wonder if all those car accidents have anything to do with the way cops are allowed to drive.
