Jake Tapper posed this question to Carney after he began Wednesday’s press briefing with a tribute to Western journalists Marie Colvin and Remi Ochlik, killed earlier that day in Syria after government forces bombed the house they were staying in, as well as Anthony Shadid, a New York Times reporter who died earlier this month from an asthma attack while trying to leave Syria.
“The White House keeps praising these journalists,” Tapper said, referring to Carney as well as a statement from Vice President Joe Biden. “How does that square with the fact that this administration has been so aggressively trying to stop aggressive journalism in the United States by using the Espionage Act to take whistleblowers to court?”
