Nobel Prize in Economics for explaining why markets fail

http://www.marketwatch.com

Three economists — including one rejected by the Senate as too inexperienced to work at the Federal Reserve — have won the Nobel prize in economics for their work in explaining why markets sometimes don’t work so well. The problem with unemployment is that, theoretically, it shouldn’t exist. Efficient market theory says unemployed workers should always be able to find a job if they just lower their standards enough, just as all employers should be able to find workers if they just lower theirs. By this theory, all unemployment is voluntary. (Maybe it would be in a free market.)

Pa. school settles laptop webcam spying suits for $610,000

http://www.chicagotribune.com

"Although we would have valued the opportunity to finally share an important, untold story in the courtroom, we recognize that in this case, a lengthy, costly trial would benefit no one," school board President David Ebby said in a statement late Monday. "It would have been an unfair distraction for our students and staff and it would have cost taxpayers additional dollars that are better devoted to education."

Right through the back door, while everyone was focused on the gulf oil spill, Barack Obama gave his signature to legislation permitting the U.S. Government to outlaw supplements and alternative health treatments.

That means that the supplements you take and therapies you use to keep your body healthy, can now be made illegal by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

Prison bans all books for inmates, except for the Bible

http://www.cnsnews.com

AP) - A South Carolina jail was sued Wednesday over its policy barring inmates from having any reading materials except the Bible.

The American Civil Liberties Union filed the federal lawsuit seeking to overturn the policy on behalf of Prison Legal News, a monthly journal on prison law. The 16-page complaint says officials at the Berkeley County jail in Moncks Corner, about 100 miles southeast of Columbia, are violating several of the magazine's and inmates' constitutional rights including free speech, freedom of religion and right to due process.

Requirement to Purchase Insurance is Constitutional, Judge Says

http://news.yahoo.com

Judge George Caram Steeh in Detroit has squashed a challenge to the health care bill by upholding the law's insurance purchase requirement as constitutional--not because there is any constitutional backing for forcing "citizens" to purchase services, but because enforcement of the law will fail without the provision: "Without the minimum coverage provision, there would be an incentive for some individuals to wait to purchase health insurance until they needed care." Huh, government school told me the three branches were supposed to challenge each other.

Philly kops caught in sting were not sting targets

http://www.philly.com

Investigators who set up a sting operation Monday had hoped to snare two corrupt Philadelphia police officers suspected of robbing drug dealers - just not the two who fell into the trap. These disclosures raise the possibility that as many as four 25th District officers have been robbing couriers, stealing cash and giving the drugs to another dealer to sell, sources said. "I don't know how deep this runs," Police Commissioner Charles H. Ramsey said in an interview Thursday. "We've got a lot of work to do."
