To Stop Crime, Share Your Genes

http://www.nytimes.com

PERHAPS the only thing more surprising than President Obama’s decision to give an interview for “America’s Most Wanted” last weekend was his apparent agreement with the program’s host, John Walsh, that there should be a national DNA database with profiles of every person arrested, whether convicted or not. Many Americans feel that this proposal flies in the face of our “innocent until proven guilty” ethos, and given that African-Americans are far more likely to be arrested than whites, critics refer to such genetic collection as creating “Jim Crow’s database.”

Loud sex enough for cops to search your home, court rules

http://rawstory.com

For Brian McGacken of Farmingdale, New Jersey, an evening of loud sex resulted in a 10-year prison sentence for growing marijuana.

On Feb. 17, 2007, New Jersey state troopers arrived at McGacken's home, responding to an anonymous 911 call complaining of screams coming from McGacken's home. McGacken explained the noise was a bout of loud sex; his girlfriend appeared at the front door and corroborated his claim

Reason Magazine: "Why I prefer French Health Care"

http://reason.com

Here's a guy on Reason.com, a prominent libertarian publication, talking about how he prefers France's single payer system to what we have in the US. That is to say, perhaps the free market is the best scenario, but the alternative isn't necessarily near the disaster we claim it to be. So far, the discussion among libertarians seems to be that European medicine is a disaster, but I've heard plenty of people claim the contrary. Let's give this a fair discussion!

President Hugo Chavez’s solution? Change all the light bulbs! Well, that might not be the only action the country is taking (they’ve also put electricity rationing into effect) but an army of Venezuelan soldiers has been given direct orders from the president to distribute thousands of Firefly energy-efficient CFL bulbs.

The pledge of allegiance and the religion of the State

http://www.examiner.com

An appellate court has rejected arguments that the pledge of allegiance violates the wall of separation between church and state. Judge Bea said schools do not require students to recite the pledge. When I was 10 I was given detention for asking what the words actually meant and refusing to stand until I understood. Even without this phrase "under God" the pledge is designed to inculcate the most nefarious form of idolatry, the worship of an omnipotent, omniscient omnibenevolent government.
