Bitcoin May Be the Global Economy's Last Safe Haven - Businessweek

That’s where Bitcoin thrives: where people would prefer to throw in their lot with anonymous strangers instead of the world economy. It’s gold-bug thinking reinvented for an age of fluid transparency and instantaneous transactions. And as such it’s an excellent indicator of anxiety. Where you see Bitcoins in action you find a weird and heady mix of speculative angst, a fear of being left behind, and people who appear to have lost faith in institutions, who feel most left behind.

Bitcoin rises - Opinion - Al Jazeera English

The context in 2013 looks dramatically different to the one during the huge rally-and-crash of 2011. During the last year, the pace of development and adoption by merchants and the NGO sector has steadily accelerated, and the Bitcoin ecosystem in general advanced in many fronts. Recent events in the Bitcoin world announce that a qualitative shift is taking place.

Many of you will be familiar with SilkRoad, and as I'm sure most of you will agree, SR has put Bitcoin on the map and in the eyes of the general public, the media, and the cryptocurrency communities. SR continues to strengthen the Bitcoin economy to this day.

Our team decided that in order for Litecoin to make its mark in the cryptocurrency world it needed a similar service backing it.

So, with that being said, we would like to officially invite you all to Atlantis (or ATL for short), the Litecoin free market. Users of SR will feel at home using our website.

Sociocrat proposes ‘Bit tax’ to Save Post Office

Lysander Spooner would say the problem is market intervention, that the Post Office fails because it lacks market signals and market competition. Wozniak on the other hand says the problem is email. A cheaper and faster service exists, and rather than improving the Post Office, he proposes turning the Post Office into a parasite on the superior service.

Everything we think about charity is wrong.

In this striking TED talk Dan Pallotta challenges the Non profit model and discusses for profit incentives and how they can be applied to charity. For anyone that's ever had to defend the morality of pulling the plug on social welfare programs this video is a must see.

Startup finds niche in digitizing physical mail

A driver of a white Prius with a giant, red plastic flag affixed to its side is rolling through the hilly streets of San Francisco, undelivering mail from mailboxes. The driver is not a thief. He and the car are part of a startup called Outbox that is attempting to pick up where the embattled United States Postal Service leaves off -- by digitizing physical mail. The driver, dubbed an "unpostman," visits Outbox subscribers' homes three times a week.

Government Ban On Bitcoin Would Fail Miserably - Forbes

I maintain that a government ban on bitcoin would be about as effective as alcohol prohibition was in the 1920s. Government prohibition doesn’t even do a good job of keeping drugs out of prisons. The demand for an item, in this case digital cash with user-defined levels of privacy, does not simply evaporate in the face of a jurisdictional ban. One could even make the case that it becomes stronger because an official recognition that Bitcoin is not only a “renegade” currency but a “so-effective-it-had-to-be-banned” currency would imbue the cryptographic money with larger than life qualities.

For some strange and unknown reason, the Small Business Administration has changed how it defines government support of small businesses, which will inadvertently destroy many small businesses, especially those supported through the Department of Energy.

5 Medical Breakthroughs That Make Life Shockingly Easy

Everyone has that one thing they'd like to change about themselves -- quitting the booze, getting in shape, kicking that public masturbation habit -- but they continually put it off, because making major lifestyle changes is hard. Damn it, science, it's the 21st century! Where's the pill that makes all of our human flaws disappear?
Not far away, apparently. At this very moment, they are testing ...
