Transportation Security Administration challenges and failures will be the focus of a joint hearing of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure on Monday. The City Council Public Safety and Education Committee released an 11-step plan Friday to strengthen public trust in the Seattle Police Department.

The measures include enhanced hiring standards and training of officers, monthly reports of sustained misconduct findings, drug-testing for officers involved in the use of deadly force and expedited review of possible criminal charges against officers.

Councilmember Tim Burgess, chairman of the committee, said the measures are meant to "stop the erosion of public confidence."

The Texas House passed a bill that would make it a criminal offense for public servants to inappropriately touch travelers during airport security pat-downs.

For now, it appears that the U.S. Attorney’s threat has realized its goal; the sponsor of the Texas bill has decided to concede defeat in this battle, but remains committed to fighting the war. “I will pull HB 1937 down, but I will stand for liberty in the state of Texas,” said Senator Dan Patrick, the bill’s sponsor. Texas NDAA Nullification Bill Includes Charges for Fed Agents.

During an update to the state's driving laws, the Texas legislature inadvertently removed the penalty for driving without a license plate. What was formerly a $200 fine now has no penalty. The new law goes into effect on January 1, 2012, and they won't be able to update it until January of 2013.

Last week the Oklahoma House of Representatives passed a bill that equates recruiting militia members to recruiting gang members. “Recruiting membership in an unauthorized militia or the Ku Klux Klan would be a crime if legislation approved Thursday by the House of Representatives becomes law. ‘This is making unauthorized militias illegal,’ said Rep. Mike Shelton, the amendment’s author,” News OK reported on Thursday.
