Gun owners hope to win the right to carry concealed weapons
In an unusual twist, optimism among California gun enthusiasts stems from recent legislation banning them from openly carrying even unloaded handguns.

RALEIGH - Now that North Carolina's no-smoking law has taken effect, most bars and restaurants across the state have thrown away their ashtrays and herded smokers to outdoor patios.

But a few bars are openly flouting the new law, allowing people to puff away indoors as much as ever.

The ones doing so are hookah bars, and their owners argue that, because of a linguistic loophole in the law, the smoking ban doesn't apply to hookah smoking.

CNN is reporting that presidential challenger Ron Paul has not been asked to speak at the Republican National Convention in Tampa. Instead, the Romney team has invited Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez and South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley. Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, Ohio Governor John Kasich, Arizona Senator John McCain and Florida Governor Rick Scott will also have prime time speaking roles.

Fort Drum is going to start sending out two person "courtesy patrols" to local bars and restaurants several nights a week. The patrols will target fights, drinking and driving and other misbehavior.

Each “courtesy patrol” will consist of an officer, and a senior non-commissioned officer. Several patrols will operate each Thursday through Sunday from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m., effective immediately.

Starting later this summer, U.S. citizens 21 and older can begin carrying a concealed firearm without a permit in Arizona. Gov. Jan Brewer signed Senate Bill 1108 into law Friday afternoon. It eliminates the requirement for a concealed-carry weapons permit, but does require gun owners to accurately answer if an officer asks them if they are carrying weapon concealed. It also allows officers to temporarily confiscate a weapon while they are talking to an individual, including during a traffic stop.

A proposed state law, advocated by Gov. John Kasich, would make it a fourth-degree felony to own a vehicle equipped with secret compartments.

"We conclude that the carrying of concealed firearms is not protected by the Second Amendment . . ." Justice Carlos Lucero wrote on behalf of a three-judge panel of the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Lucero cited case law dating to the 1800s that put restrictions on walking around in public with a gun.
