Just because "everybody does it" in Albany doesn't mean corruption is legal, New York's attorney general said in court papers Monday, arguing the case against a former top political adviser charged in a corruption scandal at the state's pension fund must go forward.

The historical high for federal prosecutions of corrupt public officials was in 1993 with 1,362 convictions total within the network of U.S. Attorney’s offices. The number lingered at or near 1,000 convictions until it peaked again in 2008 at 1,129. The number of convictions reached 1,107 in 2011, the third highest number in the last two decades.

The attorney for a Florida man who shot at a car of teens over the weekend, killing one, says the incident bears no resemblance to the Trayvon Martin case. Her client, Michael Dunn, is no "vigilante" but did feel threatened and shot out of "self defense," the attorney said. "There are no comparisons to the Trayvon Martin situation," said Robin Lemonidis, Dunn's attorney. "He is devastated and horrified by the death of the teen." He heard threats from the teens, Dunn told police, he felt threatened and thought he saw a gun in the teens' car.

The investigation has been prompted by a series of surveillance videotapes — released by Jeff Adachi, the city’s public defender, and private defense lawyers — showing officers suspected of falsifying reports, illegally entering residences and, in one instance, making a purposefully flawed arrest for drug possession.
