Police in Hampton are using a 26-foot portable surveillance tower to keep an eye on people at Hampton Beach.

The tower has four digital video cameras mounted on top, and the cameras can be used to zoom in to closely watch people along a wide stretch of the beach.

The cameras can be accessed by police officers either at the tower itself or remotely via laptops.

A man arrested at a July 4 house party is charged with a count of wiretapping, alleging he used his cell phone to film the police response. Police confirmed Tuesday that Adam H. Whitman, 20, of New Castle, was arrested on that charge. However, the charge is likely to be dismissed and/or replaced with another charge, possibly disorderly conduct or obstructing government administration. Whitman was "impaired by alcohol" when he was arrested and, when the case was later reviewed, wiretapping didn't seem to be "a viable charge."

Police across Canada are urging Ottawa to resurrect a controversial Internet surveillance bill that would allow them to monitor Canadians' digital activities in real-time without a warrant.
