I saw this news story on the Spanish news channel last night. It’s about a Spanish-language news anchor who was a victim of domestic violence. The news story focuses on her but the tape they played of the 911 call (that part is in English) is what I found enlightening. The 911 operator was absolutely abusive towards this woman who is calling for help because she was in fear for her life. This treatment is not that unusual, I can tell you. It seems to me you can’t count on 911 to rescue you like they’ve always told us to do. At least not without sarcasm, insensitivity and abuse.

The use of aggression to compel obedience is the essence of the modern state. If an individual may not use aggressive violence against his neighbor, then neither can he delegate the right to such violence to another.

Halting mass violence, including terrorism, requires a political will to address the problem at its roots. That requires western nations to revise their foreign policies in ways that do not generate and sustain cycles of violence. Unfortunately, such political will appears unlikely at this stage of human history.

A solution might be reachable to some extent by raising public awareness of these issues and bringing pressure to bear upon governments. People also need to see how their consent to wars is manufactured through disinformation.

A state Supreme Court ruling last year that “there is no right to reasonably resist unlawful entry by police officers,” when a man was charged with assaulting an officer during a domestic-violence call. The NRA pushed for a new law that allows residents to use deadly force in response to the “unlawful intrusion” by a “public servant” to protect themselves and others, or their property. Police lobbied against it. The measure requires those using force to “reasonably believe” a law-enforcement officer is acting illegally and that it’s needed to prevent “serious bodily injury.”
