Crime is going down in America, but more Americans than ever are in prison—and more and more money is being spent and made, turning this country into a giant armed camp. Here are some key points about the private prison industry:
The prison system in the United States is a profit-making industry.
Private corporations operate over 200 facilities nationwide and are traded on the New York Stock Exchange.
Six corporations control virtually all American media.
News Corp. owns over 27 television stations and over 150 newspapers. Time Warner has over 100 subsidiaries including CNN, Time Magazine, and The CW.
The self proclaimed, "world's leading provider of correctional, detention, and community reentry services," is set to buy the $5 million naming rights to Florida Atlantic University sports stadium. Capitalism at its' best or a sick salute to the police state of the USA? My only hope is that this raises awareness of the astounding profits being made by the prison industry.
Shane Bauer was one of three Americans detained in 2009 while hiking in Iraq’s Kurdish region near the Iranian border. He and Josh Fattal were held for 26 months, and Sarah Shourd — now Bauer’s wife — was held for 13 months, much of it in solitary confinement. Seven months after being freed from prison in Iran, Bauer began investigating solitary confinement in the United States. Now, in his first major article since his release for Mother Jones magazine, Bauer finds California prisoners are being held for years in isolation based on allegations they are connected to prison gangs.
More proof that they can't put all of us in jail. CA. wants to reduce the prison population, currently 170k. "We simply can't afford the punishment that we've had in California," Petersilia said.(prison expert)
The jailers say they must adhere to court ordered population caps. Must be nice to decide which court orders to follow. In CA., parole violations account for 70,000 prison admissions each year.
Former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko has been taken from a Kiev prison to ‘a remote prison colony’.
Tymoshenko was woken up during the night on Friday without explanation, carried to a police vehicle on a stretcher, and transported to a prison colony in the city of Kharkiv.
All news agencies are saying authorities are all “unavailable for immediate comment.”
Rockefeller and other critics of the industry say that cruise lines that are headquartered in the United States but have their ships registered elsewhere are getting a free ride on the backs of U.S. taxpayers, placing demands on federal agencies such as Immigration, Customs and the Coast Guard, which are charged with oversight when those ships enter and leave U.S. ports.
"They don't reimburse the Coast Guard, they don't pay taxes that will help with these 20 federal agencies that are watching over them in various ways and whose services they use, or might use," Rockefeller told CNN
