It’s OK to make a goofy film about Bigfoot on Mount Monadnock without a state permit despite New Hampshire regulations, the New Hampshire Supreme Court has ruled – but only because the peak in Jaffrey is so well known that it constitutes a “traditional public forum,” where free speech is especially protected.

A man who was kicked out of a New Hampshire state park for filming a video while in a Bigfoot costume filed a complaint alleging a First Amendment violation.

A couple of Ranger Smiths have surely earned their pay by fining a man leading a Bigfoot expedition on Federal land, citing him for not having the proper permit. They then admitted “It’s highly unlikely that he would have gotten a permit if he applied for one. It’s not normal practice to issue them for expeditions to find Bigfoot."

The American Civil Liberties Union has sued a Utah city in federal court over a "free-speech zone" ordinance, saying the Orwellian-named measure unconstitutionally requires a permit for almost any form of public expression. "Under this ordinance, you would arguably have to apply for a permit to engage in nearly any speech in the city," he said.

The Supreme Court, finishing its first sitting of the new Term, agreed on Monday to hear a single new case, a plea by former U.S. Attorney General John D. Ashcroft for immunity to a lawsuit claiming he misused a federal law to detain terrorism suspects without charging them with a crime.  The Court’s order marked the second time in the past two years that the Justices had stepped into a dispute centering on the Justice Department’s reaction to the “war on terrorism.”  The last time led to a victory for Ashcroft in a case that then ended in lower courts.

Bad news in an important Institute for Justice-launched lawsuit defending the right of free speech on the Internet about matters of diet and nutrition. A state licensing board in North Carolina tried to suppress a blogger who talked up and advised people on the health benefits of the "paleo" diet (that is, eating as we think cavement ate, no grains or processed foods), telling him directly what he could or could not say about his belief that the high-meat, low-carb diet helped him with his diabetes. The case was dismissed by a federal court late last week.

Yoav Silverstein, 17, and his mates have been getting together at Caulfield Park most Fridays to throw a frisbee around for some exercise.
