A man who spent two years in solitary confinement (without a trial) after getting arrested for DWI was awarded $22 million for suffering inhumane treatment in New Mexico's Dona Ana County Jail.

When he was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and other charges in 2005, Stephen Slevin had no way of knowing that an opinion about his mental state would put him on a path to spend more than 22 months of solitary confinement in a New Mexico county jail, despite never having his day in court.

DWI = 2 years in Solitary Confinement. Man was pulled over in New Mexico and arrested for DWI. While at the station being entered in to the system the police noticed that he was mentally unstable. So instead of calling in a dr they throw him in solitary confinement which is where he stayed for the next 22 months.

Shane Bauer was one of three Americans detained in 2009 while hiking in Iraq’s Kurdish region near the Iranian border. He and Josh Fattal were held for 26 months, and Sarah Shourd — now Bauer’s wife — was held for 13 months, much of it in solitary confinement. Seven months after being freed from prison in Iran, Bauer began investigating solitary confinement in the United States. Now, in his first major article since his release for Mother Jones magazine, Bauer finds California prisoners are being held for years in isolation based on allegations they are connected to prison gangs.

Richard Fine, who holds a PhD in international law and served as an anti-trust prosecutor at the Department of Justice in Washington D.C., has been in jail in the L.A. County Jail for over a year in solitary confinement. He never had a trial, there has been no conviction, nor any sentence to keep him there.

A federal grand jury in Bowling Green on Wednesday indicted Eaton on two counts of deprivation of rights under color of law, one count of witness tampering, one count of falsification of a document and one count of giving a false statement to federal investigators.
