The Connecticut state Senate passed legislation last week that would hold police officers in the state personally liable for violating a citizen's First Amendment right to videotape their actions. The bill is sponsored by Sen. Eric Coleman (D-Bloomfield).
"Sometimes we become aware of incidents where police officers have been overzealous or abusive and not act in a very complimentary way towards the citizens who deserve to be served and protected," Coleman said.

A sweeping bill overhauling the U.S. medical system goes to President Obama's desk on Monday to be signed into law. Judge George Caram Steeh in Detroit has squashed a challenge to the health care bill by upholding the law's insurance purchase requirement as constitutional--not because there is any constitutional backing for forcing "citizens" to purchase services, but because enforcement of the law will fail without the provision: "Without the minimum coverage provision, there would be an incentive for some individuals to wait to purchase health insurance until they needed care." Huh, government school told me the three branches were supposed to challenge each other.

The Community Living Assistance Services and Supports program (CLASS) was supposed to function as a self-sustaining voluntary insurance plan, but unless large numbers of healthy people willingly sign up during their working years, soaring premiums driven by the needs of disabled beneficiaries would destabilize it, eventually requiring a taxpayer bailout. Officials said they discovered they could not make CLASS both affordable and financially solvent while keeping it a voluntary program open to virtually all workers, as the law also required...

Desperate to avoid US military involvement in Libya in the event of a prolonged struggle between the Gaddafi regime and its opponents, the Americans have asked Saudi Arabia if it can supply weapons to the rebels in Benghazi. The Saudi Kingdom, already facing a "day of rage" from its 10 per cent Shia Muslim community on Friday, with a ban on all demonstrations, has so far failed to respond to Washington's highly classified request, although King Abdullah personally loathes the Libyan leader, who tried to assassinate him just over a year ago.
