A preschooler at West Hoke Elementary School ate three chicken nuggets for lunch Jan. 30 because a state employee told her the lunch her mother packed was not nutritious. The girl’s turkey and cheese sandwich, banana, potato chips, and apple juice did not meet U.S. Department of Agriculture guidelines, according to the interpretation of the agent who was inspecting all lunch boxes in her More at Four classroom that day.

Diane Zambrano says her 4-year-old daughter, Jazlyn, is in the same West Hoke Elementary School class as the little girl whose lunch gained national attention earlier this week. When Zambrano picked Jazlyn up from school late last month, she was told by Jazlyn’s teacher that the lunch she had packed that day did not meet the necessary guidelines and that Jazlyn had been sent to the cafeteria.

Students who attend Chicago's Little Village Academy public school get nothing but nutritional tough love during their lunch period each day. The students can either eat the cafeteria food--or go hungry. Only students with allergies are allowed to bring a homemade lunch to school, the Chicago Tribune reports.

A 34-year-old Texas mother was arrested after police say she put PCP, also known as “angel dust”, in her 6-year-old daughter’s school lunch, according to the arrest affidavit. Police say on May 4, the girl began to exhibit behavior consistent with a person under the influence of narcotics at her elementary school. The girl said she could hear “banging in her head,” and was talking to people who were not there. The girl’s school counselor called her mother, Torina Gutierrez, and reported the incident to her, the arrest affidavit states.

School lunches aren't what they used to be. At some city schools, ham and cheese sandwiches have been replaced with greasy pizza, burgers and french fries. While some schools have tried to add healthier options to their lunch menus, one Chicago school has taken a controversial approach: it banned home-packed lunches altogether.

Should schools force kids to eat USDA-approved food, or should families take back control of what their kids are eating?

A Chicago-area school has banned lunches from home, forcing children to eat (or throw away) school-provided lunches that they don't want. What do supporters have to say? "The school food is very healthy, and when they bring the food from home, there is no control over the food." Apparently some parents don't even trust themselves to provide food for their children anymore.
