In a rare move, a federal judge has struck down part of a controversial law signed by President Obama that gave the government the power to indefinitely detain anyone it considers a terrorism suspect anywhere in the world without charge or trial — including U.S. citizens. Judge Katherine Forrest of the Southern District of New York ruled the indefinite detention provision of the National Defense Authorization Act likely violates the First and Fifth Amendments of U.S. citizens.

The city of Northampton on Thursday passed a strongly worded resolution (PDF) to protest provisions of the federal government’s National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which even President Barack Obama said he had “serious reservations” about signing."

Obama has just signed into LAW the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012. Section 1021 of this act calls for indefinite detention without trial for those deemed "terrorists". Section 1022 requires that persons arrested and detained under the provisions of section 1021 are required to be held by the U.S. Armed forces. This may or may not include lawful resident aliens. Shame on you Obama. Shame on you U.S. Senate. Shame on you John McCain and Carl Levin. Welcome to the Police State.

President Barack Obama signed the National Defense Authorization Act of 2013 on Wednesday, despite his own threat to veto it over prohibitions on closing the Guantanamo Bay prison camp. Civil liberties advocates had roundly criticized the bill over Guantanamo and a separate section that could allow the military to indefinitely detain American citizens on suspicions of supporting terrorism.

Recently, there has been a victory and a defeat regarding the indefinite detention provision of the Fiscal Year (FY)2012 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Chris Hedges filed a lawsuit against President Obama and Defense Secretary Leon Panetta claiming the provision, as applied, violates the 1st and 5th Amendments. U.S. District Judge Katherine B. Forrest not only gave Hedges standing to challenge the law, she also issued an injunction to halt the legalized kidnappings!

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled Monday the federal government has the power to keep some sex offenders behind bars indefinitely after they have served their sentences if officials determine those inmates may prove "sexually dangerous" in the future.

The Australian government has indefinitely detained a pregnant mother and her two sons based on an ASIO (Australian Security Intelligence Organisation) finding of an "adverse security assessment". You guessed it, they won't disclose what it is and her family and friends can't appeal it. Truly disgusting.
