World peace has been on a downward trend in recent years, according to an annual gauge of domestic and foreign conflict.
But there are bright spots regardless of the overall global outlook. Iceland passed New Zealand to become “the country most at peace.” Other nations ranked high on the peace scale were Japan, Denmark, Czech Republic, Austria, Finland, Canada, Norway and Slovenia.

Iceland may vote to default on international debt. This is important news to Americans, because eventually, the US Federal Government will have to default on its debts, and the same political questions will come to the fore, on a much larger scale

The pictures below are from one of the protests that lead the President to veto the bill. Remember all that talk about torches and pitchforks? Well, Iceland went ahead and broke out the torches (ok - they're flares, technically):

Iceland is aiming to become a global haven for investigative journalism, with the country's parliament expected to vote through legislation protecting sources, guaranteeing freedom of speech and ending libel tourism.

Supporters liken the initiative to the offshore financial havens that corporations use to avoid government tax regimes – only for free speech.

One of my friends believes that a second American revolution is imminent and will be sparked by the economic instability now rocking the continent. Frankly, I doubt it. Insurrections may occur, but I expect the US government to lumber along, dragging the world deeper into poverty and conflict for many years to come.
