Organizers for the Coalition for a Safer Detroit warned that the battle to legalize up to an ounce of pot may be arduous and timely after a Wayne County Circuit judge upheld an Aug. 9 decision by the Detroit Election Commission to keep the proposal off the ballot in November.
The commission and judge said the ballot was pre-empted by state law banning possession of the drug.

The dark horse issue for the 2012 election cycle is Ron Paul’s influence over the delegate count for the Republican Party. Most people do not realize that the Republican primary races do not determine the nominee in the various states. Delegates are chosen after the popular election in a separate vote at a state convention by party insiders. This process is rarely reported in the main stream media.

New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch (D) on Thursday vetoed a bill that would have required voters to present a government-issued photo identification before casting a ballot.

“The right to vote is a fundamental right that is guaranteed to all citizens of this State under the United States and New Hampshire Constitutions,” he said. “Our election laws must be designed to encourage and facilitate voting by all eligible voters in New Hampshire.”

The Muslim Brotherhood's Mohamed Morsi has officially won Egypt's presidential election and will be the country's next president, the electoral commission has announced. Morsi picked up 13.2 million votes out of just over 26 million, giving him about 51 per cent of the vote. His competitor, Ahmed Shafik, the final prime minister under Hosni Mubarak, received 12.3 million. More than 800,000 ballots were invalidated. The president-elected delivered a victory address on Sunday night. He spoke on state television, long a medium which demonised him and the Muslim Brotherhood.

Arthur Furano voted early — five days before Election Day. And he voted often, flipping the lever six times for his favorite candidate. Furano cast multiple votes on the instructions of a federal judge and the U.S. Department of Justice as part of a new election system crafted to help boost Hispanic representation.

Voter ID and early voting cases heat up in courts across the country

Legal battles over controversial voter ID laws, changes to early voting rules, and even the way ballots could look on election day are being heard in courts from Florida to Nevada.

"[Curtis] Mitchell died in February 2010 while waiting 30 hours at his... home for an ambulance during a blizzard, but Chief U.S. District Judge Gary L. Lancaster dismissed his family's lawsuit against city and county emergency services."

The judge says that regardless of whether the facts are as alleged, it's irrelevant since the Emergency Services personnel are not constitutionally obligated to actually provide emergency services.

A longtime northeastern Pennsylvania judge was ordered to spend nearly three decades in prison for his role in a massive juvenile justice bribery scandal that prompted the state's high court to toss thousands of convictions. Former Luzerne County Judge Mark Ciavarella Jr. was sentenced Thursday to 28 years in federal prison for taking $1 million in bribes from the builder of a pair of juvenile detention centers in a case that became known as "kids for cash."
