An under-reported development of this campaign season is the Republican Party's decision this week to send Gov. Mitt Romney into the presidential race on a platform effectively calling for a new gold commission. The realization that America's system of fiat money is part of its economic problem is moving from the fringes of political discussion to the center.

Among the silliest things that people say about gold standard systems is that under them, the “money supply” grows about 2% per year, due to mining. This is demonstrably false – not only that, but so utterly wrong as to induce falling-off-the-chair guffaws from those who understand such things. For an example in the United States in 1775, the total amount of currency in circulation (primarily gold and silver coins) was an estimated $12 million. In 1900, it was $1,954 million – an increase of 163x!

I don’t mean that neither the pick-pocket socialist or wall street robot managed to out verbally joust the other. I mean that given this choice, the office of the president would be best left empty. I would rather vote for Clint Eastwood’s empty chair.

A bill authorizing gold and silver as legal tender passed the statehouse and with the governor’s signature will become law. This pushback against the Federal Reserve was truly a bottom-up effort, initiated by a group of activists and two freshman legislators keenly aware that the debt-based dollar is a significant drag on the U.S.

In the months leading up to the US intervention in Libya, Gaddafi had been organizing African and Arab nations to adopt a new international currency to unseat the US Dollar as the standard for the sale of oil. Gaddafi planed to introduce the Islamic Gold Dinar… that’s right… terrorist money!

Romney Resisting Reform

It seems the Utah state House is taking the advice of Texas U.S. Rep. Ron Paul, officially stamping gold and silver as legal tender.
