If an Essex County lawmaker has her way, every single bicycle in the state of New Jersey will soon have to have a license plate. Riders or their parents would plunk down up to $10 a year to register them with the Division of Motor Vehicles. And anyone caught riding an unregistered bicycle on public property could face a fine of up to $100 for each offense.

California's computer problems, which have already cost taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars, have mounted as state officials cut short work on a $208-million DMV technology overhaul that is only half done. The project was intended to revamp the process for registering vehicles and issuing driver's licenses, with the entire overhaul scheduled to be finished this year. But state officials said they were canceling the vehicle registration component because little progress was being made. The decision is a setback for the Department of Motor Vehicles, which has a history of such stumbles.

When all else fails, nothing snaps teenagers into shape faster than threatening to take away their driver’s licenses. At least that’s what legislators in South Carolina are banking on.

The Charlotte Observer reports that state lawmakers are on the verge of “fast-tracking” a bill that would take away the driver’s licenses of any teenager 18 and younger who failed to graduate or just missed too many days of class.

A New Jersey lawmaker wants minor criminals, including shoplifters, to turn over DNA samples, which he says will help clear up unsolved crimes, according to a report.
The bill, which was introduced in Trenton by state Sen. Nick Sacco (D-Hudson County), would require adults and juveniles convicted of disorderly persons offenses to submit a sample under the state’s DNA Database law, according to the Jersey Journal.

New Jersey Senator Michael Doherty (R-Warren, Hunterdon) announced today that he has introduced three pieces of legislation drafted to eliminate any immunity TSA agents might enjoy when violating New Jersey law during unnecessary and invasive airport screenings:

FTA: Under the bill, school districts would report the number of students who aren't attending class or who have more than 10 absences to the Department of Motor Vehicles. Teenagers who can prove they work to support their family, or are 17 and joined the military, are exempt. For underage students who can't prove an exemption, a letter is mailed informing the teen his or her license is suspended.

"When Vargas was 12 and living in the Philippines, his mother took him to the airport and sent him to California to live with his grandparents, he said. He didn't know about his citizenship status until four years later, when he applied for a driver's permit and handed a clerk his green card. 'This is fake,' a Department of Motor Vehicles clerk said, according to Vargas' account. 'Don't come back here again.'"
