The big news this week is a secret memo from the Justice Department titled, “Lawfulness of a Lethal Operation Directed Against a U.S. Citizen.” It was leaked to NBC News, and details the legal justification the Obama Administration believes legitimizes drone strikes on American citizens. When this story broke, most people’s first thought was of Imam Anwar al Awlaki and his 16 year old son, two American citizens assassinated in Yemen by the Obama Administration in two distinct drone strikes, but my first thought was the Free State Project.

I believe Ben Swann needs significant recognition from the Free Staters, and from FTL. He, especially recently, has been one of the most honest and straight forward reporters in the news. He hosts a segment called "Reality Check" (yes, it is on Fox) in which he gathers all the facts and makes a sound and reasonable report void of his opinion on the matter. (He has honestly reported on Ron Paul and on police brutality) 5 Stars for this man and any other person who has the galls to report honestly in a world of today!!

From the UK, more fodder for the debate over the US drone assassination campaign and the acceptability of killing citizens: In early February, a leaked white paper from the Obama Justice Department caused a small stir, because it laid out an expansive set of circumstances under which the president could order a citizen killed abroad. In September 2011, the US killed Al Qaeda propagandist Anwar al-Awlaki and Samir Khan, both US citizens, and a few weeks later a US drone strike in Yemen also killed Awlaki's 16-year-old son, Abdulrahman.

A long term Gallup poll recently measured Pakistans disapproval of United States' leadership at 92%, with only a 4% approval. The lowest approval ever measured in the country by Gallup.

And it is no wonder why, if you are paying attention.

Information shared by senior Obama administration officials with journalists on the “kill list” and drone wars in Pakistan, Somalia and Yemen is not the subject of a leaks investigation being investigated by two US attorneys, according to Reuters. The investigation, which was launched as result of bipartisan concern about intelligence leaks, will focus on disclosures on a CIA underwear bomb plot sting operation in Yemen and the Stuxnet virus that was used to attack Iran.

President Barack Obama ramped up drone strikes in Pakistan when he took office in 2009. There were 53 attacks that year, more than in the previous five years combined. Many Pakistanis oppose the attacks because they believe they mostly kill civilians, an allegation denied by the U.S. Independent research indicates that a majority of those killed are militants, but civilian casualties also occur.

Watch as Ben Swann counters Piers Morgan numbers not just on total gun deaths in the US, but on the fact that although the US has the highest gun ownership rate in the world, it is no where near the top as far as the gun murder rate goes.
