Laws and Resolutions Authorizing Hemp Research

Summary: The Virginia Legislature approved House Joint Resolution 94 "memorializing the United States Secretary of Agriculture, the Director of the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy to permit the controlled, experimental cultivation of industrial hemp in Virginia."

A group of civilly-disobedient hemp farmers and business leaders were arrested Tuesday morning while digging up the lawn to plant industrial hemp seeds at the headquarters of the Drug Enforcement Administration.

The New Hampshire legislature has approved a bill to keep industrial hemp from being listed as a controlled substance. New Hampshire farmers need two more New England states to take the same action before farmers can legally grow hemp.

Nine States--Hawaii, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Montana, North Dakota, Oregon, Vermont, and West Virginia--allow industrial hemp production or research in accord with state laws. However, federal law is standing in the way of farmers in these states growing what may be a very profitable crop. Because of current federal law, all hemp included in products sold in the United States must be imported instead of being grown by American farmers.

Calgary's Motive Industries announced it will introduce an electric car whose bio-composite body is made from cannabis.

Motive’s entry included exploring the use of a hemp-fibre composite that’s as strong as fibreglass, but lighter and less expensive.

The material will be used to replace other metal components, Armstrong said, except for the structural frame.
