Sometimes government programs have good intentions and sometimes not. And sometimes they try shit just to see what happens.

And while the history of governments doing grossly misguided things is too long and depressing to recount here, these five programs backfired in ways that could impress even the most pessimistic among us:

MAJORITY OF AMERICANS WANT MARIJUANA LEGALIZED

For the first time, the majority of Americans support the legalization of marijuana, indicating a shifting public opinion in regards to the government’s criminalization of drug use.

The new survey, which was conducted by the Pew Research Center, indicates that 52 percent of Americans support the legalization of marijuana, which is 11 points higher than the results of the 2010 survey asking the same question.

If ever there was something that worked too well, the cigarette tax might be it. A new study published by the Congressional Budget Office shows that any additional money the state obtains by raising cigarette taxes will eventually be outweighed by the increased use of entitlement programs such as Medicare or Social Security. In other words, a healthier population lives longer and uses more of the government's money.

WASHINGTON—At a time when widespread polling data suggests that a majority of the U.S. populace no longer trusts the federal government, a Pew Research Center report has found that the vast majority of the federal government doesn't trust the U.S. populace all that much either. (gee, ya think?!)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Nearly 80 percent of Americans say they do not trust the government to do what is right, expressing the highest level of distrust in Washington in half a century, according to a public opinion survey.

Only 22 percent of Americans say they trust the government "just about always" or "most of the time," according to the Pew Research Center survey released on Sunday.

Moreover, because of the growing open-mindedness and liberalism today, these primetime TV programs are coping with the growing unconventional minds and behavior of viewers. Thus more programs have become more aggressive, straight forward, and contain more controversial issues.

The government should not have the ability to virtually strip search anyone it wants. The problem is compounded in that if you do not want to go through the naked body scanner, the government has made the alternative perhaps worse! In an effort to try and make everyone comply with the scanners, the government has instituted "enhanced" pat downs. Travelers across the country have reported the TSA now touches the genitals and private areas of men, women and children in a much more aggressive manner.

Only 20% Think Government Anti-Poverty Programs Really Work. This marks a steady increase in the number of those who think the programs cause more of the problem they’re supposed to solve – from 43% last September to 45% in April to 49% now.

Highest Number Of Anti-Gay Murders Ever Reported In 2011: The National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs - More murders motivated by anti-gay bias occurred last year than any year since the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs began collecting data in 1998, the national advocacy organization reported this week. In 2011, 30 fatally violent hate crimes were committed against lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender victims, 3 more than the previous year's total.
