Florida Highway Patrol's citations to motorists have surged recently...and then it was discovered that all of the speed limit signs in a certain area had been covered up.

Like a regular speed camera, it can fine drivers who go over the speed limit, but there's also a carrot to go with that stick. If you follow the speed limit, you are entered into a lottery with cash prizes!

Massachusetts department of transportation handed out about 900 speeding tickets on a newly created stretch of road. The issue is that they did not follow their own laws around setting speed limits and enforcing them.

They have publicly admitted to the tickets being illegal and unenforceable, but when asked about possible refunds, they basically told the media that you would have to take them to court if you want your money back.

the illegality is due to the the state not performing an engineering study to determine the maximum safe speed for the stretch of road.

Studies have shown that most roads without speed limits are as safe or safer than those with speed limit. So, speed limits are just another government revenue generation scheme, a hidden tax on the poor.

Paying drivers not to speed could be the next step in the war against the road toll, a US study has concluded. The study, undertaken by research company Udini and partly funded by the US Government’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, found that speeding was virtually eliminated among a group of drivers who were offered US$25 ($25) a week not to exceed the speed limit. The report concluded there were "dramatic reductions in speeding" with even modest financial incentives.

Regardless, they're designed to save lives, but this weekend, a woman on a motorcycle was killed while being pulled over. "They were wearing helmets. They don't drink. They were out for a nice "Sunday cruise" and now Margie is gone," said the victim's friend, Nancie Risola. "Margie's not gone because they were going a little over the speed limit," Risola said. "She's gone because they were stopped in an unsafe place."

"He was driving an estimated 56 mph, nearly twice the speed limit...He was issued two citations: speeding and negligent driving. He pleaded guilty to the former, and a judge found him not guilty of the latter, saying there was no evidence of errant driving beyond speed. Cokinos was fined $160, and he went forward with his career on the force."
