In case you hadn't seen, Erowid is accepting donations with Bitcoin. I haven't heard it mentioned recently (that I remember), but it used to be a favorite website on FTL. When we talk about a shortage of "resources," most people immediately think "oil." But the only reason oil is the most famous of the dwindling resources is because we feel the spike in prices, since we have to go buy the stuff ourselves on a weekly basis.

But other resources that are key to keeping our society operating are running out just as fast, but much more quietly. Pretty soon, you may turn on CNN to hear about wars being fought over something ridiculous, like ...

Executive Order -- National Defense Resources Preparedness Act. This is freakin' scary. Just signed on Friday the 16th, and some are saying that a large if not world war may be looming, and the govt. knows that it currently doesn't have all the domestic resources and infrastructure to wage a sustained world war. The war drums with Iran are beating, and Russia and China have been reported to defend Iran.

Is this really happening?

President Barack Obama issued an Executive Order on March 16, 2012 giving the White House absolute control over all the country’s natural resources in case of a natural disaster or during a time of war. In the order, the National Defense Resources Preparedness Order, the President granted to himself the authority to approve the dispensing of all domestic energy, production, transportation, food, and water supplies as he deems necessary to protect national security.

The company Planetary Resources plans to develop and launch a series of robotic systems and unmanned spacecraft, starting with its Arkyd-100 Earth-orbiting space telescopes that it hopes to launch by the end of 2013 to identify candidate near-Earth asteroids containing natural resources. A single 500-meter platinum-rich asteroid would have the equivalent of all the platinum-group metals ever mined on Earth, the company said.
