Opposition to new full-body imaging machines to screen passengers and the government's deployment of them at most major airports is growing. Many frequent fliers complain they're time-consuming or invade their privacy. The world's airlines say they shouldn't be used for primary security screening. And questions are being raised about possible effects on passengers' health. The machines — dubbed by some fliers as virtual strip searches — were installed at many airports in March after the false flag underwear bomber incident.

With the new TSA full-body-scanners and pat downs at several airports, creators Tim Geoghegan and Matthew Ryan have designed a special type of shirt called 4th Amendment Wear.

The tee has the privacy rights in the amendment printed on the front with metallic ink designed to show up during the scanners.

A bipartisan bill introduced in the Senate requiring all airports to use full-body scanners lacks sufficient privacy safeguards, says a prominent watchdog group.

German protesters have demonstrated against the planned introduction of body scanners at airports by stripping down to their underwear and, in some cases, beyond.

The group of protesters, calling itself a 'Fleshmob', converged on Germany's Berlin-Tegel airport this week, writing messages on their bodies and handing out leaflets voicing their concerns about the new scanners' invasion of privacy.

The TSA next week will begin installing the first of 150 full-body scanners approved last May as part of the federal stimulus plan. Boston Logan International Airport will get the first three scanners, followed by one machine slated for Terminal 1 at Chicago O'Hare. The remaining scanners should be in place by the spring, according to the TSA.

The Transportation Security Administration is feeling public heat these days over its combination of whole-body-image scanners and heavy-handed pat-down searches, and deservedly so.

There’s no question that reform is needed to curtail TSA’s excesses. We especially applaud the Electronic Privacy Information Center’s efforts to increase public awareness about the body scanners. But will the heat now being generated produce the kind of light we really need?
