Three Seattle police officers were justified when they used a stun gun on a pregnant mother who refused to sign a traffic ticket, a federal appeals court ruled Friday in a case that prompted an incredulous dissent.

A federal appeals court says three Seattle police officers did not employ excessive force when they repeatedly tasered a visibly pregnant woman for refusing to sign a speeding ticket.

In 2005, seven-months pregnant Melanie Williams was chased by police into the St. Vincent's Medical Center emergency room, where she was tackled, handcuffed, and dragged back outside... because she had run a red light while on her way there under doctor's orders.

A panel of the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta said the officers used reasonable force, so Williams can sue only for unlawful arrest.

An Indianapolis woman is suing the city in federal court. LaDonna Dixon claims the officer beat her so severely during an arrest that she had a miscarriage.

“[He was] punching me, kicking me, after he maced me,” Dixon said.

“This person was angry, was enraged and just beat her,” said Dixon’s attorney, Everett Powell. “I would say it’s a crime.”

A three-judge panel found that even if the officer observed no illegal conduct, a traffic stop and interrogation is justified when a driver seems not to want to be around a patrol car.

WASHINGTON -- A police officer can't pull you over and arrest you just because you gave him the finger, a federal appeals court declared Thursday. In a 14-page opinion, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit ruled that the "ancient gesture of insult is not the basis for a reasonable suspicion of a traffic violation or impending criminal activity."

Taser, the company responsible for the popularized stun-gun, has begun supplying US police officers with Google Glass-like cameras that record everything the cop does. The catch is, the files are locked away on private servers owned by Taser.
