The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against Boston police officers who arrested a man who used his cell phone to record their alleged use of force against a suspect.

Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson said Saturday that as president he would be more fiscally responsible and a greater defender of civil liberties than Barack Obama or Mitt Romney.

The American Civil Liberties Union has sued a Utah city in federal court over a "free-speech zone" ordinance, saying the Orwellian-named measure unconstitutionally requires a permit for almost any form of public expression. "Under this ordinance, you would arguably have to apply for a permit to engage in nearly any speech in the city," he said.

Decriminalize the Average Man

If you reside in America and it is dinnertime, you have almost certainly broken the law. In his book Three Felonies a Day, civil-liberties lawyer Harvey Silverglate estimates that the average person unknowingly breaks at least three federal criminal laws every day. This toll does not count an avalanche of other laws — for example misdemeanors or civil violations such as disobeying a civil contempt order — all of which confront average people at every turn.

In its 2004 report, the 9/11 Commission called for "a board within the executive branch to oversee adherence to the privacy guidelines we recommend and the commitment the government makes to defend our civil liberties." President Obama waited until last December, halfway through his term, to nominate anyone for the board.

This DOJ hack was asked four times if his department will not attempt to criminalize blasphemy in the future. This guy, Edward Perez, who is the assistant attorney general for the Civil Rights Division, weaseled out of answering by stuttering and asking for a proposal from congress, and even using the old standby of threats and "depending on the circumstances. To sum up, this jackass refused to answer if the DOJ would in fact violate the right to free speech.

Connecticut State Sen. Martin Looney (D-New Haven) has introduced a short bill (PDF) that not only acknowledges the right of citizens to record on-duty police officers, it also provides for a civil action against police officers who violate that right.
