A former Ottawa Hills police officer was sentenced to 10 years in prison Monday for the shooting of a motorcyclist during a May, 2009, traffic stop.

Thomas White, 27, was convicted May 14 in Lucas County Common Pleas Court of felonious assault with a gun specification for the shooting of Michael McCloskey, Jr. A jury deliberated for about six hours after a week-long trial before reaching a verdict.

LOS ANGELES -- A white former transit officer was convicted of involuntary manslaughter Thursday in the shooting death of an unarmed black man on an Oakland train platform in a 2009 encounter that set off days of rioting in the city.

The jury deliberated more than six hours over two days to convict Johannes Mehserle in the killing of 22-year-old Oscar Grant, who was shot to death as he lay face-down.

A jury found Ed "NJWeedman" Forchion not guilty Thursday in the Rastafarian activist's marijuana distribution case.

The decision came after Forchion was nearly held in contempt of court in the morning as he delivered his closing argument.

Forchion, formerly of Pemberton Township, tried to introduce his jury nullification argument into the closing, but was quickly stopped by Superior Court Judge Charles Delehey, who had barred any discussion of it.

"Paul Clarke thought he was doing the right thing by taking a "shorn-off shotgun" he'd found to the police. He forgot that he lives in England. The police immediately arrested him for possession of a firearm. At trial, prosecutor Brian Stalk explained that possession is a "strict liability" charge, meaning that Clarke's good intentions were irrelevant. The jury found him guilty, and the ex-soldier faces a minimum of five years in prison. "

Bodden's family said they were told by his passenger, Tony Weeks, that Bodden was shot after Bright yelled out to Cole that Bodden was reaching for something at the motorcycle. Weeks said that he witnessed the shooting from the hood of Cole's car, where he was being handcuffed after Cole found some type of pill in his possession. Weeks said Bodden had been told by the deputy he was free to go when the shooting occurred.
