A federal jury in Jackson ruled Friday that a Henry County sheriff's deputy was wrong in seizing more than $14,000 from a woman during a lengthy traffic stop in 2008.
As a result, the jury awarded the woman, Carmina Perez, $75,000 in damages Friday, according to a report on WSMV-TV from Nashville.
Perez filed a federal lawsuit after Deputy Ricky Wade pulled her over on Interstate 40 in July 2008 and seized more than $14,000 from her, alleging that they were illegal proceeds from drug sales, even though Perez was not charged with anything. Wade was working for the 24th Judicial District Drug Task Force at the time and pulled her vehicle over in Decatur County.
