Has anyone heard anything about identity theft via census? The local census-takers are calling us on the phone, wanting to fill out the census over the phone. That's INCREDIBLY ripe for identity theft.

Dan Wheeler, a Washingtonian and victim of identity theft found himself arrested due to his identity being stolen by a sex offender. The state refuses to clear Wheeler's name, for fear that the actual offender will continue to use Wheeler's name as an alias. Why not arrest everybody? What's to stop the sex offenders from using anyone's name?

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - A veteran Montgomery police officer is under arrest and charged with two counts of identity theft.

Chief Anthony Batts told the media there were at least 44 situations that his officers would no longer respond except via online to if the cuts were made. Here's a partial list:

* burglary
* theft
* embezzlement
* grand theft
* grand theft: dog
* identity theft
* false information to peace officer
* required to register as sex or arson offender
* dump waste or offensive matter
* pass fictitious check
* obtain money by false voucher
* fraudulent use of access cards
* stolen license plate
* embezzlement by an employee (over $400)
* extortion
* attempted extortion

It is with no small amount of schadenfreude that I report that our esteemed and despised Central Banker, Ben Bernanke has apparently become entangled in an elaborate identity-theft scheme after his wife’s purse was stolen containing a checkbook from their joint account. The story was broken by Newsweek on Wednesday and they’re claiming that the Bernankes were not specifically targeted. (It’s only a coincidence. It’s only a coincidence. It’s only a coincidence!) But I’m not so sure.

The Oakland Police Department is feeling the burn of California's unending budget crisis, as 80 officers were laid off Tuesday night after negotiations between city and police union failed to reach an accord.

The department's chief had said in recent days that unless the city could meet the union's demands, officers would no longer respond in person to register sex offenders, or for reports of vehicle accidents, grand theft, identity theft, burglary, embezzlement, vandalism, stray animals and others.

The Department of Homeland Security, in tandem with the UK's EPSRC, is funding a project called IMPRINTS (The Identity Management: Public Responses to Identity Technologies and Services) to study the response of US and UK citizens toward various identity technologies, and related government policies (such as porno-scanning), in order to minimize dissent and maximize obedience. This is behaviour modification.

"If you come home to find your house burglarized and you call, we're not coming," said Oakland Police spokeswoman Holly Joshi. The city laid off 80 officers from its force of 687 last month and the department can't respond to burglary, vandalism, and identity theft. "It's amazing. It's a big change for us." In other words, the monopoly is almost out of business, but no other organization can legally defend people from property crimes.
