That's the question surrounding the case of Jeff and Jennifer Counceller, who rescued an injured fawn and nursed it back to health at their Connersville, Ind., home. The couple now faces the possibility of jail time and fines after state officials charged them with a misdemeanor for harboring the animal.

Jeff and Jennifer Counceller accused of illegally harboring the fawn they named Little Orphan Dani. Indiana Department of Natural Resources ordered the deer euthanized calling it a potential threat to humans. Couple say they planned to release fawn into wild after its recovery.

The new ordinance prohibits people from feeding the animals at urban parks and sets out fines for violators. Nobody can "feed, touch, tease, frighten, hunt, kill, wound or intentionally disturb wildlife in any city park," without authorization, the ordinance states.

Anyone caught running afoul of the law, however well-meaning his or her intentions, faces fines of up to $750 and jail time...
