Libertarians have “tremendous power” to roll back big government even without electing anyone, writes Dr. Mary Ruwart on LibertyForAll.net.

As libertarians, we have tremendous power. However, we are so focused on winning elections that we tend to neglect our real strength. We’re frustrated by the “wasted vote syndrome,” but do little to counter it, even though we hold the key in our hands. That key is activism at the local, state and national level. If we have the power to roll back big government, shouldn’t we use it?

Now there is a bold proposal that directly defies the federal government by nullifying federal firearms laws. State nullification of federal law is the legal theory that individual US states have the right to invalidate any federal law that the state finds unconstitutional.

A 65 year-old Wisconsin man who once testified before State Legislators that he received personal visions and messages from God is being prosecuted by the federal government and faces life in prison. Ralph W. Lang, who was arrested in 2011 for plotting to kill abortion doctors at Planned Parenthood, has been re-indicted by the Federal Government.

The state of Washington is the latest state to cave to the federal government and the DEA regime as their governor is set to veto a purposed medical marijuana bill on Friday, for fear that the federal government might go after state employees.

On Thursday, Washington became the first state to officially legalize marijuana, soon to be followed by Colorado as their new laws legalizing the drug for recreational use go into effect. A survey out Friday shows what Americans want the federal government to do about the states whose drug laws clash with national laws: Leave them alone. Fifty-one percent of Americans in the new HuffPost/YouGov poll said that in the two states that have legalized marijuana use for adults, the federal government should exempt any adults following state laws from federal drug law enforcement.

Over the past many decades, the federal government’s own internal debate on its responsibility has changed in a subtle but very important way. Before the change, the federal government would act in the marketplace when people believed that everybody had a right to something. Now it intervenes even when it does not believe something should be guaranteed.

Move puts burden of paying for sewage system upgrades on District residents. So now the residents of DC, most of whom, believe it or not, are poor and middle class, must pay for the upgrades to the DC sewage system. These upgrades are required by...the federal government. Various government agencies are calling the fees "an impermissible tax of the federal government."

New York Gov. David Paterson is warning that if he is forced to shut down government next week chaos and anarchy will rule in the state. “No one knows the full ramifications of a government shutdown,” said Paterson. “It would create unimaginable chaos around the state and the greater metropolitan areas,” reports WCBS TV. The legislature in the Empire State has failed to pass a budget and this will result in doomsday, according to Paterson.
