A rural Oregon man was sentenced Wednesday to 30 days in jail and over $1,500 in fines because he had three reservoirs on his property to collect and use rainwater. Gary Harrington of Eagle Point, Ore., says he plans to appeal his conviction in Jackson County (Ore.) Circuit Court on nine misdemeanor charges under a 1925 law for having what state water managers called “three illegal reservoirs” on his property – and for filling the reservoirs with rainwater and snow runoff.

The Catholic monks of Saint Joseph Abbey in St. Benedict, Louisiana, are being legally threatened by the government. Why? Because the liberty-hating political class demands that you and I get “permission” from government to make money.

Those wacky monks must have thought that this was a free country or something.

Of course, as soon as government has the power to demand you get permission from the State (some call that permission a “license”), you gotta do business in the manner that they dictate, and through the channels that they demand, and you pay the fees that they say you pay.

Move puts burden of paying for sewage system upgrades on District residents. So now the residents of DC, most of whom, believe it or not, are poor and middle class, must pay for the upgrades to the DC sewage system. These upgrades are required by...the federal government. Various government agencies are calling the fees "an impermissible tax of the federal government."

Apparently, selling firearms without government permission is a far more serious offense than murdering people abroad on the government's orders.

The UK's tax collection agency is putting forth a proposal that all employers send employee paychecks to the government, after which the government would deduct what it deems as the appropriate tax and pay the employees by bank transfer.

No matter how many new laws and regulations governments create, old and obsolete laws are never repealed. Over the years, this has led to an environment in which all of us are unwittingly guilty of committing multiple felonies every day. The only thing keeping us out of prison and saddled with crushing legal fees is we haven't attracted the attention of enterprising and/or bored public officials.
