WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London and has requested political asylum, officials and WikiLeaks said Tuesday. Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino read a statement to reporters at a news conference in Quito. He took no questions. Assange has been fighting for a year and a half against being sent to Sweden for questioning about accusations of sexual abuse. Two women accused him in August 2010 of sexually assaulting them during a visit to Sweden in connection with a WikiLeaks release of internal U.S. military documents.

STOCKHOLM — The founder of WikiLeaks was accused of rape in a Swedish arrest warrant Saturday that turned the spotlight onto the former hacker who's infuriated governments with his self-proclaimed mission to make secrets public.

The accusation was labeled a dirty trick by Julian Assange and his group, who are preparing to release a fresh batch of classified U.S. documents from the Afghan war.

Please, yes he could have really raped two women who know each other, in two separate incidents — even though he knows that an arrest can be made at any time. He knows full well that the U.S. has a long reach and other governments cooperate. He knows there are people who want to silence him. He knows it is not a matter of if, it is only a matter of when.

But how much sense does that make? It’s not logical.

Not impossible, of course. But there is something else that is possible: People do get removed if they become a problem to the higher-ups within the political class.

The warrant for the arrest of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been withdrawn, the Swedish Prosecution Authority has confirmed.

Universities are warning students, that they better not read the WikiLeaks documents, or post links to them or even mention them on social media, because they could prevent them from getting the necessary security clearances to get government jobs. Anna Ardin, one of two women behind the rape charges against the WIkiLeaks founder, may no longer be cooperating with prosecutors. Not only is she no longer in the country, but she’s blabbing about having worked with the CIA, according to her own comments made at Twitter.
