University administrators met Thursday with NORML ISU, the campus chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, about the use of the school’s mascot on their club shirts. The T-shirts say NORML ISU on the front, with Cy’s head in place of the “O.” On the back is the slogan “Freedom is Norml at ISU” and a marijuana leaf. Now, Montgomery said, the group feels unfairly targeted, because other clubs on campus can still use Cy, with university approval.

The Police Department has called the cameras another tool in the crime-fighting kit, but it doesn’t track the data of how useful the footage might have been in investigations and convicting the accused.

A third person is now in jail for remaining silent in front of a grand jury. This is stemming from the same incident in Portland in which authorities raided a house looking for black clothing and "anarchist" literature. Though the 3 have not been charged with crimes themselves they are now all in prison for not testifying.

Several U.S. states have started reassessing their medical marijuana laws after stern warnings from the federal government that everyone from licensed growers to regulators could be subjected to prosecution. The Department of Justice said two years ago that it would be an inefficient use of funds to target people who are in clear compliance with state law. But U.S. attorneys have said in their recent memos that they would consider civil or criminal penalties for those who run large-scale operations — even if they are acceptable under state law.

Patrick J. Cunningham, chief of the Criminal Division of the U.S. Attorney’s office in Phoenix, will invoke his right to remain silent under the Fifth Amendment, and not testify before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform or its investigators about his role in, or knowledge about, Operation Fast and Furious.

"Bob Newland, the director of the South Dakota chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, founder of South Dakotans for Safe Access, a medical marijuana group, and publisher of Hemphasis, was sentenced to one year in the Pennington County Jail, with all but 45 days suspended.
