The Trouble With Socialist Anarchism

The new movie "V for Vendetta" has provoked public discussion of the meaning of anarchism. Murray Rothbard was an advocate of the stateless society, but he was never accepted by the anarchist movement and is still considered more a "capitalist lackey" than anarchist thinker. Indeed, anarcho-capitalism has always been considered an oxymoron by the self-proclaimed "true" anarchists.

mainstream print and electronic media regularly use “capitalism” to refer to “the economic system we have now.” And it’s relatively common to hear “capitalism” employed as a synonym for “dominance of workplaces and society by capitalists—by the owners of substantial capital assets.” Libertarian principles as I understand them entail support for capitalism in neither of these senses.

Statists of all stripes should read this prior to arguing against anarcho-capitalism, agorism and voluntaryism.

People always seem to say that Capitalists are greedy. This tale proves the exact opposite to me! That Capitalism, in it's truest form, allows people to compete so they can engage in charitable acts in the future. How many people would be able to donate to charities if there were no Capitalism?

It didn’t take more than a few nights at OccupySF to realize that the core group of Occupiers were deeply committed young socialists, communists and social anarchsts, even more so at Occupy Oakland. In fact the magazine that started this whole Occupy Movement, AdBusters, is arguably an anarcho-communist rag. They are homeless young adults who are voluntarily unemployed as an act of rebellion against capitalism.

It is ironic that Occupy Wall Street is reportedly very low on cash. This is something that Wall Street itself never has to worry about. They have ready access at all times to as much cash as they need. The Occupiers mistakenly blame capitalism, but it is not capitalism that is behind this inequity. It is the completely anti-capitalist Federal Reserve System.

When the pilgrims first came to America they almost all starved to death because they adopted communal agriculture. How the pilgrims saved themselves was to adopt the primary prerequisite for a capitalism economy, private property. Mayflower pilgrims had a system in which all goods were owned by the community. All produce was in a common store, from which each individual would receive equal ration regardless of how much he had contributed. The colony was unable to produce enough food until individuals traded with Indians and fellow Pilgrims.
