The framers of the American system drew upon all of history in their deliberation. Likewise, there is no reason that democracy in the Middle East must emulate the democracies of the West when they could learn from America’s history and avoid problems so deeply entrenched they will never be solved here. To paraphrase Thomas Paine, they have it in their power to begin the world over again.
