28% of adults believe it is at least somewhat likely that some states will try to leave the United States and form an independent country over the next 25 years or so; just 21% of voters nationwide believe the government today has the consent of the governed.

Who are these centrist, independent-minded voters who swung the elections in Virginia, New Jersey and Massachusetts to Republican candidates and are likely to be crucial in races this fall?

Political analysts are searching for a name. They have tried “tea partier,” “populist,” “conservative,” even “strange and unpredictable.”

None of these fits, however.

These voters are neither populist nor conservative. But many may be libertarian — fiscally conservative but socially liberal or tolerant.

A teenage Sudanese mother accused of adultery has been sentenced to death by stoning...Intisar Sharif Abdallah, who is believed to be under 18 and has a four-month-old baby, was tried without a lawyer, found guilty and sentenced to death. '...imposing this punishment on someone who may be a child is especially shocking,' said Daniel Bekele, Africa director at Human Rights Watch. Sudan is notorious for its brutal and archaic punishments.

The underlying question is, with what do they want to replace their current government? Sudan is not likely to become a modern voluntary society and the story does not say what is wanted.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that just 17% of Likely U.S. Voters think the federal government today has the consent of the governed. Sixty-nine percent (69%) believe the government does not have that consent. Fourteen percent (14%) are undecided.

The number of voters who feel the government has the consent of the governed - a foundational principle, contained in the Declaration of Independence - is down from 23% in early May and has fallen to its lowest level measured yet.

"Country" is from "Terra Contrata" meaning a spread of land. It is a non-political term concerning the land, its people and their customs. "Nation" comes from "Natus" meaning that which is born and is the dominant racial subtext of a country's politics. "State" comes from "status" meaning condition/standing and is the political machinery of the Nation. A "Country" is a friend of liberty while the "Nation" and "State" are its enemy.
