In a case going back to 2010, a Colorado judge has ruled that a woman named as a defendant in a criminal case can be forced to decrypt the contents of her laptop and files. Answering the question of 'what about her fifth amendment right to non-self-incrimination, the judge ruled the fifth amendment does not apply in this case, even though the contents of the protected files could be used to prosecute and convict her.

Violations of the law are recognized as a misdemeanor and result in a charge of up to $125. The law requires companies and individuals that are registered as entrepreneurs to only use domestic domains for providing online services, conducting sales, or exchanging email messages.

If passed, the U.S. government could blacklist any website it deems in violation of copyright, which could range from a few posts in a Web forum to a few links sent in an e-mail.

One exception has been the domain registrar GoDaddy. Read more »I was very excited when I first hear about Diaspora, which in my mind would have been a great alternative to the evil empire that is known as Big Brother, ahem, I mean Facebook which is a CIA front (most people know this by now). I dreamed of an opensource social networking type that gave its users more power.
