How the US public was defrauded by the hidden cost of the Iraq war

http://normantranscript.com

"When the US invaded Iraq in March 2003, the Bush administration estimated that it would cost $50-60bn to overthrow Saddam Hussein and establish a functioning government. This estimate was catastrophically wrong: the war in Iraq has cost $823.2bn between 2003 and 2011. Some estimates suggesting that it may eventually cost as much as $3.7tn when factoring in the long-term costs of caring for the wounded and the families of those killed."

Bomb, drone attack kill 16 people in Pakistan

http://news.yahoo.com

President Barack Obama ramped up drone strikes in Pakistan when he took office in 2009. There were 53 attacks that year, more than in the previous five years combined. Many Pakistanis oppose the attacks because they believe they mostly kill civilians, an allegation denied by the U.S. Independent research indicates that a majority of those killed are militants, but civilian casualties also occur.

Did We Just Kill a Kid?: A Drone Operator’s Story

http://leaksource.wordpress.com

Bryant saw a flash on the screen: the explosion. Parts of the building collapsed. The child had disappeared. Bryant had a sick feeling in his stomach. “Did we just kill a kid?” he asked the man sitting next to him. “Yeah, I guess that was a kid,” the pilot replied. “Was that a kid?” they wrote into a chat window on the monitor. Then, someone they didn’t know answered, someone sitting in a military command center somewhere in the world who had observed their attack. “No. That was a dog,” the person wrote. They reviewed the scene on video. A dog on two legs?

Central Banking and War

http://www.huntsvilleliberty.com

Central banking makes longer, more destructive wars possible, by obfuscating the cost of war through inflation. Without central banks, total war might not be possible, and would be far less likely.

Drone Strikes in Pakistan Miss Militants and "Terrorize" Civilians

http://www.democracynow.org

A new report on the secret U.S. drone war in Pakistan says the attacks have killed far more civilians than acknowledged, traumatized a nation and undermined international law. In "Living Under Drones," researchers conclude the drone strikes "terrorize men, women, and children, giving rise to anxiety and psychological trauma among civilian communities." The study concludes that most of the militants killed in the strikes have been low-level targets whose deaths have failed to make the United States any safer.

"In the early-morning hours of Sunday, August 22, 1971, FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover and Attorney General John Mitchell announced that FBI agents had arrested 20 antiwar activists in and near a draft board office"

Judge Fisher informed the jury they could acquit if they felt government participation in setting up the crime had gone to “intolerable” lengths that were “offensive to the basic standards of decency and shocking to the universal sense of justice.

Endless War and the "Military-Industrial-Political Complex"

http://newsjunkiepost.com

The endless war: the “war on terror” without any geographic boundaries, time frame or even the necessity to have a well defined enemy. The blood thirsty machine that is the US industrial-military complex makes billion at all three phases of the war industry process: the manufacturing of ever more lethal and complex weapon systems, the destruction stage, and then finally the occupation and rebuilding phase in countries such as Germany, Japan, Korea, and more recently Iraq and Afghanistan. This war machine and its political associates always needs new conflicts.

Grim Reaper Military Patch for Navy's Drone Programs

Check out this military Patch featuring the Grim Reaper...Executive Office for Unmanned Aviation and Strike Weapons. Logos, of course, are an organization's officially branded way of communicating with external audiences. They're supposed to stand for something, and to tell observers what business you're in. The drone program is in the killing people business, apparently (as opposed to the surveillance or intelligence business).

Obama Administration Sued Over Assassinating US Citizens

http://news.antiwar.com

The American Civil Liberties Union failed in late-2010 to push a lawsuit challenging the Obama Administration’s claimed power to assassinate American citizens without charging them with any crimes, but is hoping for a consolation prize today, filing another suit challenging the killings after the fact. “It’s an effort to get accountability,” noted ACLU deputy director Jameel Jaffer, saying that even though the Justice Department successfully argued that the killings couldn’t be challenged beforehand, they could now press the administration to “explain to a court why it did what it did.”

Taliban bomb destroys 22 Nato fuel tankers

http://www.bbc.co.uk

A bomb planted by the Taliban in northern Afghanistan has destroyed 22 Nato fuel tankers carrying supplies to coalition forces, local officials say. The vehicles were hit by a pre-dawn explosion which triggered a huge fire that engulfed them in flames, they say. At the time, the trucks were parked overnight in Samangan province, as they headed from Uzbekistan towards Nato forces in the south. Police told the BBC that the fire caused by the bomb is still burning. An intelligence official said the device was attached under one of the trucks, which were parked close together.
